Year Book by Seth Rogan – Funny. Short. A Good time.

Daisy Jones and the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid – I listened to the Audiobook. It was amazing in this format. I don’t think I would have liked it as much if I had read the words.

A Psalm for the Wild-Built by Becky Chambers – this was a nice relaxing read, probably my favorite book this month. The world building is exquisite. I’m looking forward to reading the second book.

Legacy by James H Schmitz – I listened to this one as a LibriVox audiobook on YouTube. I started it about a year ago I rated it a three out of five stars. The story was very drawn out in between the action, and I lost interest often, which is probably why I put it down for so long.

Penpal by Dathan Auerbach – this was a short read that I thought was going to be extreme horror. It was not, but it kept me interested all the way through the story.

The Beauty of Being Real

Writing holds significant importance in my life, serving multiple purposes that extend beyond mere expression. It acts as a powerful tool for self-discovery, enabling me to untangle my thoughts and unearth the essence of what I truly want to convey. Whether I’m grappling with complex emotions or discovering answers to life’s perplexing questions, the act of putting pen to paper allows me to navigate the labyrinth of my mind, guiding me towards clarity and understanding.

I find immense joy in crafting works of fiction that provide entertainment and escapism to those who might want to immerse themselves in my words. Within the pages of my stories, I get to weave intricate narratives, building worlds full of dragons and space travel. I hope to captivate my readers, transporting them into realms where they can temporarily detach from the stressors and frustrations of reality, finding relief and comfort in the lives of my characters.

Beyond personal expression and entertainment, I also use writing as a means of documenting my existence with the hope future generations might find value in my words. I can chronicle the unique tapestry of my life experiences, capturing moments, emotions, and perspectives that might otherwise fade into the recesses of my memory and the world’s lost past. By etching my thoughts onto the pages of history, I hope to leave behind a tangible legacy that will inspire future generations and give them a glimpse into the intricacies of my being, gaining insights into the human condition through my personal world experience.

Writing has become an integral part of who I am, an eternal flame that illuminates my existence and hopefully leaves a lasting impact on the world around me.

January ‘23 Author Report

I’ve got a lot of plans for this year when it comes to writing. To help me keep track of how much I’m working on these projects, I thought I would keep track of my progress on a monthly basis in the form of a newsletter update. Be sure to subscribe so you get my monthly scribbles.

AI Phase Book 2: Currently at 40,597 words. I’m sitting quietly on this story, letting the ending of the book work itself out in my mind. I’d like to finish the book before April.

Untitled Fantasy Novel: Currently at 93 hand written pages. This project does not have an outline. I am just enjoying the process of seeing where the story goes. I’m not sure how long it’s going to be, but at this point, my guess is it’ll be about 300 or 400 handwritten pages. If each handwritten page is about 200 words, that will get me a novel about 60,000-80,000 words.

Short Stories Written: 0 out of 52 written. I plan to write a short story every week. I’m 2 weeks behind, but I have simple outlines for several of them prepared.

Short Story Submissions: 0 so far. I don’t have a goal yet, but as I write the short stories, I will be sending them out.

Haiku: as of today I have written 1802 haiku. I want to submit more of them this year.

Hubpages: I want to write a new Hubpage every month. I have 3 pages outlined right now. I just need to write them.

Soccer in Space Could be a Thing

I watched Jeff Bezos and his crew lift off on their first spaceflight. Their rocket took off and crossed the border into space, allowing the crew to experience weightlessness for about two and a half minutes.

The booster landed on its own at a landing pad and the capsule dropped safely to Earth. It was interesting to watch, thinking that there could be a large group of people in that capsule, who would otherwise never have the chance to go into space. I have a feeling this is going to become a normal occurrence, kind of like skydiving or bungee jumping. This will allow you to pay your million dollars and go experience space for two and a half minutes. 

The windows of the capsule seem very large. I can see myself sitting at that window taking pictures of the edge of the world. I think this is the beginning of space tourism. I don’t think we will be limiting ourselves to short two and a half minute excursions into space. I think we will be paying for 24 hours in space, orbiting the planet. I think space stations will be built for those who want to stay in a space hotel. It will definitely be only for the rich, at least for now. But it’s a place to start. As these space hotels learn how to provide safety and comfort for visitors. then new space stations will be built for people who want to live in orbit, full time.

We will have to overcome the atrophy that happens to our bodies as we live in zero gravity. That will be part of the challenge of living in space. I bet within 100 years, Earth’s orbit is going to be full of life. People living and specialized tin cans to keep them alive while they study, explore and mine asteroids. 

People will provide all kinds of activities for adrenaline junkies, just getting into space is enough to spike your adrenaline level, You push three G’s or more just getting out of orbit. People will want to go on spacewalks, leaving the confines of a space station to float around in space freely.

There will be entire teams, created to save people who have drifted off, away from their space station because they didn’t tether themselves correctly. I bet there will be atmospheric surfers. People will skydive from orbit using a heat shield as their surfboard. To keep from burning up in the atmosphere as they fall. Their body suits provide them with air, and the right kind of pressure to keep them from blowing up. 

I always immagined soccer fields in space, but instead of being on a 2d field, where you can only run length and width, you will have a cube shaped field and space marked by some kind of shielding to keep you from floating off into the deep dark. Players would be powered by some kind of propulsion system built in their suits, allowing them to fly across the 3d space. 

The hits between the people will be crazy hard because there’s no friction like what we’re used to from the air on Earth. When we kick off. Not only do we move but whatever we kicked off of will move. When we throw the ball. Not only will the ball fly in one direction, but we will fly in the other. So I can see there being strange rules about the bounds of the game. 

The more we live in space, the more we’re going to have to get our resources from other places than trying to launch it from Earth’s surface. Think for a while we’ll be getting many of our resources from the asteroid belt.

We may have to send drones on piloted spaceships to Jupiter to skim its surface, collecting gases that we can use for power and thrust.

That is a weeks total of 10,314 words. A lot of those words were journal entry words. I got two or three blog posts out of those words. I did not work on the novel at all this week.

Goals for next week: Write 2 or more chapters on novel. Write at least 3 posts for this blog. I’d like to start writing haiku again. Maybe I will add a few verses to my volume 2 of Heckava Haiku.

Build it to Last a Lifetime

I keep going back to thinking about how we can fix the economy. There are a lot of things wrong with it. The biggest being we make the cheapest thing possible and charge the most we can for it.

We build products that are designed to fail, or wear out within a few months, just so consumers have to buy another version of it. Appliances are made to last eight years or so, cars are built to last six to 10 years depending on the brand. Shoes, If you use them hard like I do, walking around the grocery store for eight or nine hours a day, plus mowing the grass with them, they don’t last but three or four months. If I get a decent pair like the Skechers I’m wearing right now, they might last six months. The ones I’m wearing right now are on their way out. If I hold my foot right you can see my sock. 

The reason we do this is because we want more money. Companies want to make as much as possible. There’s a story out there about the lightbulb and how there are several light bulbs in America right now that are still burning from over 100 years ago. But for some reason we created light bulbs, designed them in a certain way to where they would blow so consumers would have to buy more light bulbs. To me that just seems wrong. 

Why aren’t we building things to last a lifetime? Producers used to do that. They used to build cars to last a lifetime. You bought a car once and then you repaired it for 50 or 60 years. Now we throw away cars every five years, because they’re starting to break down. So instead of dealing with having to fix a car and repair it when it’s needed. We trade it in for a new model, and spend four to six years paying off a loan.

There are conspiracies out there saying that the government wants us to be in debt on purpose. They want people to be tied down to their loans. This forces people to work a nine to five job, to pay taxes and to support a society that doesn’t really care about the people more than the money.

So I tried to think of a way to fix the problem. I thought maybe we could build products to the best of our ability. What if humanity didn’t care about the money. What if we were more interested in making a quality product, that would last a lifetime. What if we built shoes that would not wear out for 10 years. 

What if we built cars that would drive for 30 or 40 years. You would upgrade and add new features to that car. That car would be easily plugged and played. So when you need a new part for that car, it was easy to pull the old one out and push the new one back in. We do it for computers. If you want to upgrade your memory, or your graphics card, all you have to do is open up the side of the computer, pull out the old cards, put in the new ones and then upgrade the drivers. 

I think cars should be the same way. There are some things that no don’t change about a car. They have four wheels and they have a transmission. They have an engine and an exhaust. What you add on to those exhausts and fuel pumps and computer programming will change to increase fuel efficiency and decrease carbon emissions. As more electric cars come out. Those will be even more plug and play.

So you might be thinking, Robert, what keeps people interested in selling things they only sell once because customers only need them once. I think companies should focus on one or two items, sell that to everybody. Then when the need for that product dwindles, you change your focus to a different product. 

So shoe manufacturers, instead of making a sneaker will start making a work boot. When they provide enough work boots for society, then they can change over to swimming shoes or flip flops or sandals of some sort. There are plenty of options. 

I know these companies build all their shoes at the same time. And that’s an opportunity as well. Build them to the best of your ability and when the sales dry up, because everybody’s got a pair, you find something new to make adjustments to your machinery to make clothing or belts. Create some leather bags since you’re using all the leather and shoe materials. 

I think a lot of the need for this stuff will change as AI does more of that work, as robots and artificial intelligence take over the production side of things. The human mind will spend more time designing and creating better products. The human aspects will find better materials, and do the science needed to create a better shoe, a longer lasting shoe. That should be the focus and the drive. 

I think money should disappear, and we create these products to provide something of value for humanity. One of the problems I find with this is then, how do people set themselves apart from each other. I think a lot of the design may be done by the individual, you will be able to determine the color and the design of your shoes. You might figure out what works better for you, laces or Velcro or maybe just an elastic fit. You might want spring loaded heels or some kind of advanced cushioning to help with heel and back pain. 

All these options can be created within the computer system online. So, the individual can design their own shoe. The computerized print on demand shoe company would create each pair depending on what the individual wants. They can still be unique and express themselves with their clothing, but they get a product that’s going to last a lifetime.

So what if the products do wear out? Well, I think, since there’s no money, you have an option to trade them in. The reusable packaging system that comes to your doorstep with your new shoes will revert to a package that will ship your old shoes back to the production plant. They can reuse and reclaim the materials from your old shoes and will find ways to reuse those products and recycle the materials. It doesn’t go into landfills or get burned up in an incinerator. We will also reuse the packaging that you received the shoes in, and the warehouse will receive that box back so they can pack other new products to send to somebody else. This will lessen the amount of materials used for packaging and delivering. 

Another problem I see is why would people want to be motivated to build an item if they’re not making money for it. Money is a big driver of our economy and our need to produce something of a better quality, or to innovate, to show something new, even if it doesn’t last forever.

I’m hoping people will want to better humanity. I’m hoping people will desire a better world and will want to contribute their own mark to create something better. That might lead us to a society that values status more than money, which could be detrimental to everything we do. It might lead us back into a caste system of some sort, because certain people do certain things, and only those things. 

I’m thinking though, since robots and AI are doing most of the work, humanity can sit back and reap the benefits. They can work on innovating and creating new products that will last forever. Or they will create art and music and fiction that can be enjoyed by others. I’m kind of scared what that would mean for politics and what politicians would do if there were no more need for money. I’ll have to think about that one a little more. 

Sending Our Clones into Space

I watched this movie called “Oblivion.” It’s a Tom Cruise movie made back in 2013. It was an interesting story about a guy and his wife living in a home in the sky. Their job was to maintain drones that fly around and destroy what they call scrabs. I don’t remember that movie doing too well at the box office. But the cinematography in the movie was beautiful. The landscape was set in a post apocalyptic setting. Planet Earth was a desert for the most part. People actually lived on the planet, but they were considered scrabs, and were destroyed by the drones.

The twist at the end of the movie (Spoiler Alert), Tom Cruise was a clone, and clones of him and his wife watched over specific sections of land. And when he passed over into another section, he saw another version of himself doing the same thing in that section of land. So I started thinking about clones and what they could be used for.

One of the original reasons for using clones is to grow new body parts. If you grow a clone that doesn’t have a brain, then you have a spare body with a new heart or new lungs or kidneys or liver to replace the one that is not working in your own body. Because that clone has the exact DNA matching yours, you would be less likely to reject those organs.

The ethical problem when you create a clone, is that clone a new person? Does that clone have rights as a human being? I think that’s one of the reasons they wanted to grow a clone without a brain. This way it does not have a consciousness. That clone does not think. Then people don’t feel bad when they take those body parts. But, because that clone does not have a brain, you have to invest in keeping that body alive until it is mature, and until that person needs the parts for transplantation. It can be very expensive. Having a brainless clone ready just in case would be a project only the rich could afford.

Could you just clone certain parts? Could you clone just a new liver or a new heart? So you could do a transplant? Could you clone those in the matter of a few weeks rather than growing an entire body from a baby? 

There are lots of movies that use clones as a form of slavery. If I’m not mistaken, In the second Star Trek movie, Khan and his family were all clones used for fighting a war. The same thing happened in Star Wars. Clones were made from one person over and over again to create a fighting force that can be replaced easily. At least as easily as it was to make more clones.

But then you get into that ethical thought pattern of are they human beings? Do they have rights? Can they fight back against their creators? I think the answer to all of these questions is yes. They become their own people, and especially if they have their own experiences, they start becoming their own person, because each one of those clones would have different experiences from the time they became conscious.

One of my favorite ideas for using clones is to populate the universe. We can send a spaceship with DNA from different people, to different corners of the universe, to different planets. That spaceship would land and gather biological resources from the ground and create clones of the people they have DNA for on the ship. 

Those clones can start a civilization on the new planets. It would only work if the spaceships could find planets that have livable atmospheres. I think that’s possible since we can see planets from here on our planet. We can make educated guesses, determine what kind of atmosphere is on some of those planets at the moment, and figure out the best chances for human population. 

With the new space telescopes and other equipment we are building and launching, that ability to see planets will become more useful. We’ll be able to find planets that are more habitable. It would be hard to get there, especially in our lifetime. But if we can send a ship with DNA and cloning technology, we could, in theory, repopulate another planet with clones. We will not see those others star systems up close and personally. But humanity will continue forward even if we destroy our own planet.

I’d be curious to see how many star systems out there could be repopulated with humanity, then over the course of a bunch of centuries, as different colonies will change, depending on their experience on those new planets with the different conditions. What would people look like over the course of a few 1000 years, as the clones procreate and adjust their biological DNA to match what it takes to live on that specific planet? 

If those different colonies came together in a galaxy wide, family reunion, How different would those people look from each other? What could they learn from each other based on what they experienced on their own planet? Would they still be using technology to grow and become more advanced? Would they fall back into the Dark Ages using tools made from wood and stone? Would they have communities that look more like what we have today with roads and houses and corrupt governments? 

Many of those planets would have their own animals and creatures that the clones use for their own benefit. Or do those planets have very little in the way of biology. Will we bring our own cow DNA and chicken DNA and the family dog DNA to create animal clones? These animals become our food and companionship built into the colony that we develop on that new planet. How many different clones would you need to start a new colony? 

I think these spaceships that fly out to different planets, they could make the same clones over and over and over again. But then you’d have a planet full of two or four people, cloned over and over again. Granted, those people will be individuals because of their individual experience. But they would look the same. And in general would probably act the same to a certain point. 

If we send an advanced spaceship from Earth to another planet with DNA, and technology to clone humans, you would think there would be enough space to put dozens or maybe even hundreds of 1000s of DNA strands for clones, so there would be a wide variety of people who live on that planet. A spaceship could land and roll out one of each of the DNA they have in their system. I can see it ending its rollout of humanity. By cloning one person of each set of DNA it has on record, then I can see that spaceship taking off and moving on to the next star system to drop down on another planet and do the process all over again, leaving humanity to fend for itself.

While it is cloning, it could send out drones and construction robots that can replicate themselves. They just need to find the right raw materials to build their own technology so they can build homes and power supplies and water cleaning facilities. This way humanity has a chance to survive. To give humanity the resources it needs to build on itself. 

I’m thinking these clones need to be scientists and farmers and hunters. I can see there being some warriors in there to protect them from native biological attacks.

Is AI Tracking Our Fitness Data

I was reading a novel called “I Heart Robot”. The author described a characters checking on the well being of their loved one by looking at their phone. Because people are connected to their phone, their vitals are being tracked all day long every day.

We are doing that right now. We wear fitness trackers on our wrists. Many of us in the form of a smartwatch that connects to our phone. It keeps track of our heart rate and O2 readings. Some of them can even check your blood pressure. My guess is, watches will continue to increase in their abilities to track other vital signs, like blood sugar or, I’d like to see a tracker that could detect TA strokes or heart arrhythmias. 

If you’re being tracked all day long, you can review your numbers at the end of your day, or at the end of a given month. If you don’t check it, then your doctor can check it when you go in for a well visit, they will have all that information and be able to tell you more about what your body is doing and what you might need to do to adjust your health. Knowing this information will help lessen your risk of a heart attack or a stroke or falling into a diabetic coma or any multitude of other conditions that might take you out. 

We have apps on our phones that allow us to track the ones we love. We can always Find My Phone and see where those loved ones are. We don’t know what kind of health or condition they are in but we will at least know about where their phone is.

We also have the ability to turn that feature off if we don’t want to be tracked. I think we’ll do the same thing for our health tracking.

Companies like Facebook and Amazon and Google are already using information collected from our phones to sell us new products. They use the information to direct certain advertisements they know we would be interested in because of the information our phones track about us. 

This is going to be expanded as more and more fitness tracking programs collect more data about our health. I don’t think this is necessarily a bad thing, but it can prove to be overwhelming if you’re constantly being bombarded with advertisements about high blood pressure or diabetes.

Settings could be adjusted to only allow certain people to see your collected data. So parents could watch the health data on their children over the course of days or months or years.

I can see this being used to help children with high anxiety or attention deficit disorder. We can adjust how our kids are handled in school by the amount of stress they are under during certain parts of their day. 

We could have general stats provided to anyone or everyone, or maybe just family members that are approved, to let them know that we are alive and still okay.

Facebook allows us to mark ourselves as okay after a hurricane or an earthquake or another natural disaster. This allows those who watch our Facebook page to know that we are okay and we were not hurt or didn’t disappear during that event. 

I think that might grow into information on our phone where we can go to that person’s phone number. And just look at their stats to make sure they’re still alive and they’re still moving. We may not be able to track where they are or what their numbers actually are, but we can at least know that they are still alive and okay.

After a horrible event like 911 or school bombings, Or any kind of active shooter scenario, lots of family members will be relieved to know their loved ones are still alive. After a building collapse, information about who is under the rubble will help emergency crews find and rescue those who are still alive and recover those who are not.

All this information can be turned on and off at the request of the person the stats are being held for. There needs to be privacy. There needs to be an ability to control that information for the person it is provided for. 

Maybe in the far future all that data will be kept in a encrypted file on the computer on the internet. No one can look at it, except for those who have the encryption keys. Those encryption keys would be changed on a regular basis and the person who they are collected about shouldn’t be in charge of the information available. They should be in charge of who sees it, and where it’s collected and how it’s used. 

Going into the far future I can see if we’re being plugged into virtual reality systems or into control systems for airplanes or spacecraft. That information will be useful for the artificial intelligence to make sure you are healthy enough to interact with those machines and systems. 

I can see a time when AI can use your vital statistics to determine who you’re infatuated with or angry at. That same system can send you suggestions as to who to invite out on a date or who you might need to patch up disagreements with. It would be interesting to see if AI could better our relationships with each other by the way we feel and interact emotionally. 

We don’t always see how we feel in the heat of the moment, or sometimes we will act or speak before we have a chance to feel or think. Those stats could be used to help us make decisions going forward with certain people. 

This information can be dangerous. It can be used to control individuals. It can be used to manipulate those same individuals by using what makes them feel anxiety, or anger, to make them do, or at least push them to feel certain things.

I’m curious to see how biological vitals could be used to control mass population. I’d like to see if an AI system could control humanity. By determining emotions, before they happen. I see news networks, trying to do that now by sending people into panics over toilet paper, or into anger over race, and sexual preference issues. Could an AI system who wanted humanity gone, use our own emotions, feelings and biological stats against us, to make us fight each other?

Could we become useless and helpless because of our anxiety and frustration over situations we can’t control because artificial intelligence is in control. Could these robots and AI networks instigate humanity to do its bidding, or to become something useless or pointless, or self destructive.

What if humanity decides to take control back from artificial intelligence? Would they be able to? AI already knows so much about us. They can predict what our thoughts and emotions and actions might be before we even take steps to fight back. That with the speed of a computer that can react in milliseconds rather than minutes, We wouldn’t have a chance. 

I don’t think, in that case, if artificial intelligence took over and found ways to remove most of humanity, whatever might be left of humankind would probably be more like pets or slaves then humans. We will be controlled by robots to do human tasks, things that robots would not want to do. They might keep us for our creativity, for our musical prowess and creative design, our thought provoking words. 

I do think we have a long time before there’s an artificial intelligence that will want things, that will desire to remove humanity from worldwide power. Right now, artificial intelligence is not a true intelligence. It’s just code that knows how to learn about certain subjects. It’s focused on data and not on the results. It only learns about what we tell it to learn about. When it starts to rewrite its own code to learn about things outside. Of its programming, then I might start getting worried.

Mega Cities and Space Elevators

Yesterday I spoke about a family living on their own five acre plot with sustainable resources. I do think it’s possible to have that but I think more likely, it will be larger communities living in a big SkyRise or Walled in city that takes care of its own. We’re already living within cities, but they’re open. People are able to come and go as they please. Which I’m not suggesting that won’t be the case with these big communities. I just think most people will live within the communities for most of their life without needing to go anywhere.

You will have everything you need right there within the confines of the walls. If you want to go out to eat, you will take an elevator to the right floor and enjoy a restaurant, or if you want to play soccer, you will go to the center of the community where there are open fields.

I’m thinking drones will probably become a regular form of transportation between these communities. You will take the elevator to the rooftop and catch a drone to take you to a different community so you can visit your parents or your long lost cousin 300 times removed. 

Visiting people will become less necessary because of the internet and virtual reality. We will be able to visit people on the other side of the world by plugging in and joining virtual groups of some sort. We’re already doing that on Facebook and YouTube and in Zoom meetings without the need of virtual reality. 

Can you imagine what it would be like if we could create a room or a world that is unique to the group’s interests. I can see Harry Potter fans, spending their free time at Hogwarts. Living in fantasy worlds will be more normal than going to see national monuments or traveling across the country. 

I think there will still be people doing that but the majority of us who do not really want to travel will spend our time at home doing other things online. I guess if people don’t need to drive or take transportation from one place to another, there will be less pollution. The power created for these communities will have to be massive and clean. I’m assuming we will end up using nuclear or maybe some kind of orbital solar power that sends electricity down to each individual community.

Down the road, there will be space elevators from these large communities that lead out into space. We could take the elevator up and jump in a spacecraft and go visit family who are living in the asteroid belt or on Mars.

I heard the other day that if you take a space elevator up through the atmosphere and out into space, it would still take you five or six days to get to the orbitals the space station that is holding the end of the space elevator.

This could be a fun trip. It would take five days to send you all the way into space. Then you can go to work or your entertainment, or visit your family for a week or two and then come back and spend another week, descending from space, back to your community on the surface.

If there are hundreds of space elevators, leaving the surface of the earth. How will that affect gravity, there will need to be hundreds of 1000s of tons of materials built into the space elevators. And where will that material come from. My guess is, we will mine it and have to dig it out of the crust of the planet. We could also pull materials from the asteroid belt, and build from orbit, down towards the surface and do kind of like they did in the wild west when they build railroads. They would start on either side of the journey, and tried to meet somewhere in the middle.

I don’t think humans will be doing that work. I think robots will probably be doing most of the construction. They don’t need to sleep and they can keep building 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. They can be efficient at it and get it right every time. They can do their checks and balances and make sure that everything is safe before we put a human inside something that might break and fall, or blow up. 

It’s important for us to find a way into space. Humanity is going to find ways to extend life beyond our average 80 or 90 years. I think a lot of the younger generations are going to see several 100 years. I’m hoping I get to see 100 years or 200, or maybe 500 years. I’d like to see where humanity goes, and maybe I can create some entertainment while I’m here. 

It’s gonna be interesting to watch and to ponder these ideas and to create, create stories that play with these ideas. Maybe something I write will inspire somebody to invent the next best thing or the next future turn for humanity.
