Garden Diary 2009: Bush Beans and Tomatoes are Doing Great
My Bush Beans and Tomatoes are doing great. I need to take some time and separate and repot my tomatoes into bigger pots. I am thinking about planting one of them in a hydroponic wick system this year to see how they grow.
The Cucumbers and Cabbage is growing well. Growing a little on the slow side. I think that is because I am forgetting to water them.
Basil is growing really well. The spinach I was growing didn’t like the move to outdoors. It just kind of died so I pulled them.
Something has been eating my broccoli. Think it might be caterpillars, but I am not sure.
Garden Diary 2009: I Wonder if I Should be Cutting the Spinach to Make it Grow
The leaves are getting bigger on the spinach. They are growing a lot slower than I thought they might. I am wondering if the leave will get bigger and greater in number if I cut the older leaves. I’m not sure. I might conduct a little experiment.
The broccoli is growing nicely outside. They seem to have taken nicely to being moved. I pulled some of the old leaves that browned on me. We will see what they do over the next few weeks.
The other seeds I planted are coming up. I have marigolds, bush beans, tomatoes, and cabbage. I look forward to their continued growth.
I am Starting My Seeds Indoors This Year: Spinach, Broccoli and Apple Trees
My Gardening Adventure for 2009 has begun. This year I am going to start my plants indoors. Take a look at the following video to see all the supplies I have compiled over the past three years.
Since it is the beginning of February, I figured I should start some of the cold tolerant vegetables. This year I wanted to try some broccoli. I also planted some spinach that I thought I would leave on the windowsill over the course of the summer. I also planted a few apples.
I am using Scotts Potting Soil to get things started this year. When I transfer everything to bigger containers, I will have to see what soil is on sale. I will let you know what I buy when I know.
When I popped out the drainage holes on the bottom of the container, it cracked all the way across. I should have use a utility knife to pop the first one out. That is what I used on the second one. I am still going to use this pot this year. I don’ think it is going to give me any problems.
I filled the container with potting soil and pushed holes into the soil with my finger. In each, I planted seeds. I planted six spinach plants, four apples trees and four broccoli plants.
I placed the whole thing on the windowsill and poured two small juice glasses of water on top. We will see what comes up.
How to Grow an Apple Tree from a Seed
Step One: (February 11, 2009) Plant your seeds in a pot or, in my case, a windowsill box. I am doing this because I want to make sure they have a strong beginning before winter gets here again in December.
Gather your Pot, Soil and seeds.
Fill your pot with soil. Poke holes into the soil and drop in one seed for each plant you are trying to grow. Plant more than you expect to put into pots. If they all come up, you will pick the strongest plants to move into separate pots or into the ground.
Place your planting box on your window sill and water with a couple of glasses of water. Make sure you water the plants every couple of days or so. You don’t want the soil to dry out, but you dont want the water sitting in the drainage tray.
Still Waiting. March 27, 2009 – It has been nearly 2 months. I know that tree seeds take a while to germinate, i just don’t know if these are going grow or not. If they don’t I will try again. Please come back and check often.
May 18, 2009 – The seeds I planted never germinated. One of the comments I got said to put them in a wet papertowel and stick them in the fridge. I think I am going to try that next.
